Calendula & Clay Shaving bar
Why do most people purchase soap?
Is it the smell of the bar, the quality of the ingredients, or the purpose of the soap? Scientific research has shown that most people buy soap for 3 reasons: how the soap smells, how it looks, and how it is packaged. Many people buy soap to match their bathroom décor. Sometimes they never use the bar because they believe it is too pretty to use. Although it is nice to have a pretty bar of soap that smells good, many times it is a contributing factor for dry, irritated skin.
Popular brand soap is not really soap at all...
Most commercial grade soap is produced in huge factories that have been streamlined to produce soap as quickly and as cheaply as possible. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), most of the soap that is currently on the market is not really soap at all. They are synthetic detergents and consists of many ingredients commonly found in dishwashing and laundry detergents. Made with cheap, harsh ingredients such as sodium tallowate, dimethicone, carcinogens, synthetic colorants, and fragrances, these “soaps” strip your skin of its natural moisture.
Soap comes from the term "saponification", a chemical reaction that occurs when you combine oil, sodium hydroxide (lye), and water. This reaction results produces glycerin, which gets naturally distributed throughout the soap. Glycerin helps to attract moisture to the skin and prevents it from over-drying. Most commercial-soap companies remove the glycerin from their soap and sell it seperately to be added to other skincare products. Natural glycerin soaps are great for all skin conditions.
The best path towards healthy skin is switching to daily use of handmade soap formulated to treat your specific skin condition. Here are 5 natural soap bars that are sure to meet your skincare needs.
